Statistics

The Piel is the D-stem of Biblical Hebrew — diagnostically marked by a dagesh forte in R2 — and is the most common derived stem in the language. With approximately 5,474 tokens across the Hebrew OT it appears roughly 18 times per 1,000 Hebrew words, more than ten times the frequency of the Hophal.

The table below shows Piel token count, total word count, and frequency per 1,000 words for every OT book in canonical order. The density bar is capped at 25 per 1,000 words (████████████████████ = 25/1k); books that exceed the cap are marked ★ — their actual density is shown in the per 1,000 column.

Top Piel Roots

Ten roots account for a disproportionate share of all Piel occurrences. The single verb דִּבֶּר alone represents roughly 19% of all Piel tokens — because speaking in Biblical Hebrew defaults to the Piel form (the Qal of דבר is rare and largely poetic).

Key Observations

  1. The root דבר (speak) dominates. With ~1,035 tokens — roughly 1 in 5 Piel occurrences — דִּבֶּר is the default verb for speaking in Biblical Hebrew. When a narrative says "he spoke," it is almost always a Piel. The Qal of דבר is rare and largely confined to poetry.

  2. Psalms leads in raw count (677) but not in density (34.85/1k, 3rd overall). The Psalter's heavy Piel use reflects the praise vocabulary — הלל, ספר, שבח, שיר all default to Piel. The book most used for prayer and worship relies heavily on the stem students are learning today.

  3. Nahum tops the density chart (46.68/1k) — nearly 3× the OT average. A short book of only 557 words, Nahum's vivid judgment rhetoric (scatter, devour, destroy, cover, cut off) drives intense Piel concentration. The same is true of Lamentations (37.28/1k) and Malachi (35.71/1k), both covenant-confrontation texts.

  4. Leviticus is the most Piel-dense Torah book (27.25/1k). Its ritual and purity legislation generates repeated Piel verbs: command (צוה), consecrate (קדש), atone (כפר), fill (מלא). Deuteronomy (17.56/1k) covers much of the same law in direct address, reducing the Piel density significantly.

  5. 1 Chronicles is the lightest-density book of significant length (8.56/1k). Nine chapters of genealogy (chapters 1–9) with virtually no verbal action drag the denominator up while the Piel count stays low — a reminder that word-count denominators include all parts of speech, not just verbs.

  6. The Perfect is the most common Piel conjugation (25%). Together, Perfect + Imperfect + Weqatal account for 57% of all Piel tokens. A student who can recognize the Piel Perfect, Imperfect, and Weqatal can read the great majority of Piel occurrences encountered in OT text.
