Etymology and Semantic Range¶
Alpha-privative + χάρις (grace, favour, thankfulness). NT hapax legomenon (here and Luk 6:35 only).
Luk 6:35 uses ἀχάριστος of those to whom God shows kindness despite their ingratitude — setting up the contrast that Paul exploits: God lavishes grace; the last-days person refuses to acknowledge it.
OT / LXX Background¶
No LXX occurrences. The Hebrew Bible addresses ingratitude narratively (Israel's repeated forgetfulness of God's acts, Psa 106) rather than through a single term.
NT Distribution¶
Theological Note¶
Ingratitude in Paul's theology is close to the root of pagan sin: Rom 1:21 names failure to give thanks (εὐχαρίστησαν) as one of the first steps in moral decline. ἀχάριστος names the settled character of one who never gives thanks.
