Ch28 — Hophal Strong: Exercises

← Back to lesson

Exercise Description
ch28-hophal-hiphil-contrast A 24-item drill contrasting Hiphil and Hophal forms drawn from the biblical text (Gen–Lev), ordered by scripture reference. Students identify the root, stem, conjugation, PGN, and translation for each form. Builds on BBH Chapter 28 (Hophal Strong Verbs). A single unified table replaces the former multi-part structure. Stems are mixed throughout the exercise to prevent pattern-matching by position.
Ch28 Hophal Paradigm Drill Write all 26 inflected forms of מות (Hophal) from memory. No Imperative — passives cannot be commanded.
"Spot the Hophal" — Chapter 28 Passage Exercise Students identify and parse Hophal (passive causative) verbs across eight passages: Gen 22:20, Gen 39:1, Gen 42:28, Gen 43:18, Exo 5:14–16, Exo 10:8, Exo 40:17–18, and Num 35:16–18, 30–31. The exercise contains 12 Hophal verbs and 8 distractors (4 Qal, 2 Niphal, 2 Hiphil). Students identify the stem, parse Conjugation/PGN/Root, and supply a brief English gloss. Clicking ▶ Answer reveals the column-aligned parse and the KJV translation for that verse.
ch28-stem-id-drill BBH Chapter 28 · Hophal Strong Verbs A 24-item identification drill mixing Qal, Niphal, Hiphil, and Hophal forms of strong roots (6 per stem), interleaved. Uses roots שׁמר (keep/guard), קטל (kill), כתב (write), and פקד (appoint/muster). Students select the stem, conjugation, and PGN from dropdowns and enter the root and gloss. PGNs include 3ms, 3fs, 3cp, 3fp, 1cs, 1cp, 2ms, and 2mp, giving broad coverage. Each of the four stems is represented in every major conjugation type (Perfect, Imperfect, Wayyiqtol, Imperative, Inf. Absolute, Participle). Includes a Hophal Imperative (item 20).
