"Spot the Pual" — Chapter 32 Passage Exercise

Chapter 32 — Pual Strong

Full Screen (Interactive) Print / PDF Markdown

Students identify and parse Pual Strong verbs across three Torah/Prophets passages: Numbers 22:6, 12; 23:8, 20 (the Balaam cycle, richest Pual concentration in Torah for ברך), Exodus 29:36–37 (consecration of the altar), and Exodus 14:4 / Isaiah 43:23 (Pual of כבד). The exercise presents 15 verbs: 3 Pual targets and 12 distractors drawn from Qal, Niphal, Piel, and Hophal. Students indicate whether each verb is Pual, then parse Conjugation/PGN/Root and supply the Stem/Function. A key diagnostic skill is distinguishing Pual (Qibbuts under R1 + Dagesh in R2) from the visually similar Piel (Hireq/i-class under R1) and Hophal (u-class on the prefix consonant, not R1).

Sample Questions

Q1. 1 תְּבָרֵךְ Yes No Perfect Imperfect Wayyiqtol Weqatal Imperative Inf. Construct Inf. Absolute Participle 3ms 3mp 3fs 3fp 2ms 2mp 2fs 1cs 1cp ms + 3mp suffix ms fs mp fp Intensive Factitive Passive Reflexive NOT Pual

A: ✗ No — Piel | Imperfect | 2ms | ברך | Intensive — "you bless." R2=ר rejects dagesh; Piel identified by tsere under R2. The Pual passive counterpart appears next as מְבֹרָךְ.

Q2. 2 מְבֹרָךְ Yes No Perfect Imperfect Wayyiqtol Weqatal Imperative Inf. Construct Inf. Absolute Participle 3ms 3mp 3fs 3fp 2ms 2mp 2fs 1cs 1cp ms + 3mp suffix ms fs mp fp Intensive Factitive Passive Reflexive NOT Pual

A: ✓ Yes — Pual | Participle | ms | ברך | Passive — "blessed one." Qamets under R1 (compensatory lengthening because ר rejects Dagesh Forte). Pual Ptc. prefix מְ + Qibbuts→Qamets pattern.

Q3. 3 יוּאָר Yes No Perfect Imperfect Wayyiqtol Weqatal Imperative Inf. Construct Inf. Absolute Participle 3ms 3mp 3fs 3fp 2ms 2mp 2fs 1cs 1cp ms + 3mp suffix ms fs mp fp Intensive Factitive Passive Reflexive NOT Pual

A: ✗ No — Hophal | Imperfect | 3ms | ארר | Hophal passive — "shall be cursed." The יוּ prefix (Shureq = u-class vowel under the preformative) is the Hophal Imperfect marker. Contrast Pual: Qibbuts is under R1, not the prefix consonant.
